Why do I need to give my age?

If you are under the age of 18, you are required to obtain your parent’s or legal guardian’s permission to register on helparoundthehouse.ca in order to use our services. We also collect age information for administrative purposes, to get a better idea of who are users are, and to better serve all users. Why do I have to send an email to contact the person who has the job/wants the job?

This might seem like an extra step, but it’s to help you make your decision smartly. By doing this via messaging within the site, you can contact someone and find out more about the job before you actually meet with them. It also protects your privacy – all users will see is your username, city and postal code. They will have no personal information about you.

Why do you ask for police checks?

While police checks are not mandatory, we highly recommend them for helpers. At helparoundthehouse.ca, we strongly recommend a number of precautions, to help you make safe choices and feel comfortable about any work arrangements made through this site. Police checks are just one of the precautions we suggest

What other safety precautions should I consider?

The first thing we recommend to all site users is to bring along a friend, parent or trusted adult with you when first meeting homeowners and helpers. As with any situation, listen to your instincts and be cautious. If you ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe, remove yourself from the situation immediately. We also recommend that when you first meet someone that you do it offsite, at a neutral location (eg. Coffee shop, etc).

How do I change my profile information?

Once you’ve registered on the site, you can update your profile at any time by signing in and visiting your Account Home Page.

What should I use as a username?

We recommend you do not use your first/last name, but other than that, it’s up to you! However, we do recommend that you keep your username friendly and informative. Please note that anything offensive will be removed at the discretion of the website administrator.

Do I have to be registered to use the site?

Yes, you do need to be a registered user to completely use the services of the site. Non-registered visitors can search for both homeowners and helpers, however, they will not be able to contact anyone within the site. To contact a user, you must be registered.

Can I only search by Postal Code?

Yes, currently our website allows searches only by postal code, allowing you to find Helpers/Homeowners in your neighbourhood. However, you can search by any postal code you like, not just your own. The website uses the first 3 digits, known as FSAs (ie. A1A), of a postal code to search, you do not need the entire 6-digit postal code.

For a complete list of FSAs in Ontario, click here http://www.canadapost.ca/cpc2/addrm/hh/current/indexa/caONu-e.asp

How do I post an ad?

Click on post an ad, fill out the information, and click Post. That’s it! Your job will be posted immediately. You can also set up alerts so that you get an email when a helper has responded.

Does it cost anything to post an ad?

No, posting an ad is free.

Can I change my ad?

Yes, just sign in, go to your Account Home Page and click on the “Posted Jobs” tab. This will bring up all current postings you have. Click on edit for the job you want to change, make your changes and click “post” at the bottom.

How long will my ad be up?

Jobs remain up until they have been completed.

How do I close a job?

Go to your account home page and click on “active jobs” tab. Beside each active job, you will see a tab called “status”. You can click on this tab and change the status of your job, including closing it.

How do I rate a helper?

Once a job has been completed, you change the status of the job to “feedback”, this will open a window where you will be able to assign a rating to the helper (from 1 to 5 stars) as well as additional feedback if you like. We kindly request that you provide feedback for each job completed, as feedback helps make our site better for you, and better for our helpers!

How do I find a job?

Once you have registered, you can either click on find a job within your Account Home Page, go to the find a job tab on the home page, or use the quick search function at the bottom of the home page. Enter the type of job you’re looking for, as well as your postal code, and a list of jobs that meet your criteria will appear. If you are interested, click on the user name of the person posting the job, and send them a message saying you’re interested.

Why should I register if I don’t find any jobs when I search?

When you register, your information, including your postal code and jobs you can do, is available for Homeowner searches. Homeowners do not necessarily always post their jobs. Instead, they often search first to see if they can find the Helper they need. If they find a Helper, they no longer need to post an ad. And if you are not registered, that means you are not showing up on the Homeowner’s search, which means you have missed an opportunity.
